15:20 - 15:55 | Workshop 1: Text and Data Mining: assessing the potential and the pitfalls for scientific, technical, and medical publishers Michael Healy, Executive Director, Copyright Clearance Center |
Researchers and informatics professionals within both commercial and academic research organizations are increasingly using advanced text and data (TDM) mining techniques to glean new insights from large volumes of literature. TDM technology allows researchers to explore vast numbers of full text articles and data sets to identify patterns that could yield promising new findings. This provides publishers with a unique opportunity to increase the value of their content and capture new revenue. Despite the promises of TDM technology, a number of challenges and inefficiencies still exist: a lack of normalized data, manual licensing processes, and multiple, distributed sources for full-text content and rights. Changes are ahead that may address these challenges, and in this presentation Michael Healy, Executive Director, International Relations at Copyright Clearance Center will review the potential and the pitfalls facing publishers in this exciting new area. | |
